Two kings.
Both on the line.

Pass the board between two humans. White goes first. Take all the time you need.

  1. Your queen becomes a second king. Kings start on d1 and e1 for White, d8 and e8 for Black. Both move one square in any direction.
  2. Every move must protect both kings. A checked king must be rescued. You cannot leave either king in check, move into check, or capture a king.
  3. Checkmate either king to win. If a player is in check and has no move that makes both kings safe, the game is over.
  4. No queens. Ever. Pawns promote to a rook, bishop, or knight. Choose when a pawn reaches the last rank.
  5. The rest plays like chess. Normal piece movement, pawn double moves, captures, and en passant. Only the original e-file king may castle; its path must be clear and safe, neither king may be in check, and the king and rook must be unmoved.
  6. Draws still count. Stalemate and bare kings draw immediately. You may claim a draw after threefold repetition or 50 moves by each side without a pawn move or capture; fivefold repetition or 75 such moves draws automatically. These are move counts, not timers.

Click or tap a piece, then its destination. You can also drag. Hover shows legal moves for the side to move. Use arrow keys to explore squares, Enter or Space to select, and Escape to cancel. Undo takes back one move.
